Adaptation d'une célèbre comédie musicale de Broadway.
Dans un appartement de l'Upper East Side, Michael, homosexuel cynique au train de vie princier, organise une fête d'anniversaire pour son ami Harold. Alors que les premiers convives s'amusent et se charrient, Harold tarde à apparaître. Michael doit en outre accepter un invité de dernière minute : son ami de fac Alan, homme marié qu'il soupçonne d'être un " homo refoulé ". Lorsqu'Harold arrive enfin, celui-ci affiche une humeur sarcastique qui alourdit l'atmosphère. Chacun laisse alors éclater ses rancoeurs…
